What do you (or that website you take as gospel) value Diop as now, V?

Again I think it's a misconception really. We have to regenerate the squad. We have to operate under FFP. The only question is when you do it and whether you get the most out of it. Making money and clearing those high wages last January helped enable that spend in the Summer. Bringing in Diop and Balbuena for Collins and Fonte is a huge gain imo, not just now but for the seasons to come. I don't apologise for wanting more of that. I don't really see any alternative. We should be wanting more of it.

Of course, I want new players, who doesn't. I just think you'd be prepared to get rid of a player who could be massively important to us, just to make more money and replace with a younger. That's fine if all you want is to be mid table, or you've already won trophies, and looking to keep it going for the future.

"I do agree if players are contributing to team spirit, that's an important factor that we can often only guess at. But I could argue that it would improve with some of the departures I'd want the club to consider."

I'd say team morale is as strong as ever. Not bad considering possibly our best player, made noises about leaving.

If we can't flog him, we need Andy Carroll to sign a pre-contract agreement with someone else to avoid any possibility of Sullivan getting pissed on a thimble of eggnog and drunkenly offering a 30-year-old cripple another year of paid holiday.

I agree with the needs. I just don't know the minds and finances of the owners enough to make that kind of concrete determination on what is going on.

Re: What do we need in January?
Regardless of last summer we need cover at rightback and central defensive midfield to push on this season. The rest can wait til the summer. Whether we do will tell us their ambition.

But again history does not say we buy £20 million centre backs near the beginning of the window either. That was when it felt different for me, go back and look at how many people gave up on the Anderson deal and I thought there was still a good chance it would happen.

And I don't think Pellegrini is okay with just surviving.

We will see I guess.

Re: What do we need in January?
Its a question of is there the will to try and push on and cover the gaps that have appeared in our squad even by means of loans in jan and go for europe. Or sit back and do nothing because we are virtually safe.

History with this bunch says the later.

it's interesting the Oracle, when talking about our January business and how much we brought in via sales, doesn't mention the £10m wasted on Hugill. a player he thought had room for growth and was a good investment :.)

Alex V,

I do understand the points you make, and to a degree, Im in agreement.

I do think though, you don't take into consideration the fact that great teams are built on camaraderie & team spirit and with your insistence of moving players on a lot, that would compromise that, which is something we shouldn't underestimate.

With regards to moving players on this January, I don't think it would be a good idea ( bar someone offering silly money). I'd wait till the end of season when hopefully, all of our injured players are back, then decide who to ship out.

Treading water after this summer?

A point couch completely in a hypothetical, a lot of text and platitudes about modern business practice.

You can do better.

Alex V 4:25 Sun Dec 16
Re: What do we need in January?
ironsofcanada 4:09 Sun Dec 16

That's a treading water mindset. Fatal at this level because our competitors might be making progress while we stand still.

I think looking at last January is a good example. We could have said 'we need to cover injuries' etc and held onto Ayew, Fonte, Sakho. But the club took a risk and actually sold them, all imo for above market prices (Ayew ridiculously so). £35m+ wages in the kitty. If they hadn't done that we might not have got Diop or Anderson, say, in the Summer. We'd be stuck a year back on squad development in that respect.

To really make progress I think you need to have vision beyond the next match or matches, but what the club needs to do to really grow as a squad. 'We hold what we have' is really an old-fashioned principle that I think is very outdated in terms of game theory or modern business practice. Suggesting it's the only logic is imo completely wrong, and that makes it doubly dangerous as a philosophy, as it is narrow-minded or ignorant to the benefits of the alternatives.

As repugnant as the owners can be, they have dipped their hand in their pockeys over the last couple of windows, I think they would back the manger if he asks for another player or two.

ironsofcanada 4:19 Sun Dec 16
Re: What do we need in January?
chedylan 2 4:11 Sun Dec 16

I choose to look at it differently. We bought a lot more in the summer (including the manager) than logically is needed to be safe - beginning with Diop (spending 20mill on a 21 year old centre back is very different from what they have done before.)

We may not spend much in the January because they have spent their budget but at this point, you can't say it is because we are safe or not.

chedylan 2 4:11 Sun Dec 16
Re: What do we need in January?
Let's be realistic for a moment.

The daves will look at our points tally on the 1st jan ( likely to be around 30 points) and think we are as good as safe for another season therefore wont sign anyone at all.
